Probiotics help fish grow up faster and healthier

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? Probiotics like those found in yogurt are not only good for people -- they are also good for fish. A new study by scientists at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology found that feeding probiotics to baby zebrafish accelerated their development and increased their chances of survival into adulthood.

This research could help increase the success of raising rare ornamental fish to adulthood. It also has implications for aquaculture, since accelerating the development of fish larvae--the toughest time for survival--could mean a more efficient and safe system for bringing fish to the dinner table.

Tiny zebrafish are often used in genetic research because scientists can easily track changes in their development and the fish grow quickly. They also share many of the same genes as humans and can be used for studying cellular and physiological processes and their impact on human disease.

"This is really exciting," said Jacques Ravel, a leading genomic scientist studying the role of the human microbiome in health and disease at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Institute for Genome Sciences. "Knowing you can colonize the gut of a zebrafish with a probiotic strain and improve its development becomes an interesting model for us to study the beneficial effect of probiotics in children and adults." He and his colleagues are currently looking into the effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus probiotics on the gut development of premature infants.

In the zebrafish experiment, researchers added Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a probiotic strain sometimes used in yogurt, to the zebrafish water. The fish drank the probiotic through their gills, and it landed in their gastrointestinal tract, preventing bad bacteria from taking over and promoting growth, including advancing the development of bone, vertebrae, and gonads.

"If you have increased growth and survival from each batch of hundreds of thousands of eggs, that is a huge benefit," said study co-author Dr. Allen Place of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology.

Probiotics helped the zebrafish get through the touch-and-go time when their gastrointestinal tract is maturing. They are still living off yolk with which they are born, and it is during this weaning period when most mortality occurs. Adding probiotics to the water increases the survival rate of zebra fish larvae from 70% to 90%.

"We did not anticipate the enhancement in maturation," said Place. "When you look at various molecular markers of stress, the overall stress in the fish that were treated with the probiotic were lower--which may be the reason for the development."

Olly Murs tops UK single and album charts

Who are the suckers now? While bragging about hanging out with tech guru turned murder suspect John McAfee, Vice accidentally revealed his location?today?by leaving the meta-data on a photo taken with him. Looks like McAfee is indeed out of Belize, as he claimed this morning. The GPS data, discovered by hacker @SimpleNomad, puts him just over the border, in Guatemala, as you can see below. (Cleverly in the exact?opposite?direction as the Belize-Mexico border, where his double was captured.)

A-Rod needs hip surgery, will miss season's start

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez will start the season in what's become a familiar place: the disabled list.

The New York Yankees said Monday the third baseman will have surgery on his left hip, an injury that could sideline him until the All-Star break and may explain his spectacularly poor performance during the playoffs.

"It's a significant blow," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "But we've dealt with significant blows and, hopefully, we'll be able to deal with this one, as well."

A 14-time All-Star and baseball's priciest player at $275 million, Rodriguez has a torn labrum, bone impingement and a cyst. He will need four to six weeks of physical therapy to strengthen the hip before surgery, and the team anticipates he will be sidelined four to six months after the operation.

This will be Rodriguez's sixth trip to the disabled list in six seasons. A-Rod had right hip surgery on March 9, 2009, and returned that May 8.

"It is a more complicated surgery with a longer recovery time because there is a little bit more that needs to be done," Cashman said, citing the bone impingement. "I don't think it's age related. Butt at the same time, the older you are, the slower you're going to recover regardless. But the bottom line and the message I've been receiving is that this is a solvable issue."

Rodriguez, who turns 38 in July, complained to manager Joe Girardi of a problem with his right hip the night Raul Ibanez pinch hit for him ? and hit a tying ninth-inning home run ? against Baltimore during Game 3 of the AL division series in October. He went to New York-Presbyterian Hospital's emergency room and was checked out then.

"Up to this point, there was no complaints of any nature at all from his hip, or anything really," Cashman said. "At that point Joe went to Alex in the dugout and said, 'I'm going to pinch hit for you and we're going to pinch hit Ibanez,' and Alex said to Joe at that moment, 'OK,' he said, 'I've got to talk to you about something. I think my right hip needs to be looked at. I just don't feel like I'm firing on all cylinders.'"

Cashman said the test on the right hip "was clean" and the left hip was not examined.

"I can tell you if a patient shows up in the emergency room with a complaint, they're going to focus on where the complaint is, not something else," he said.

Rodriguez, owed $114 million by New York over the next five years, remained a shell of his former self on the field. He was benched in three of nine postseason games and pinch hit for in three others. He batted .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs in the playoffs, including 0 for 18 with 12 strikeouts against right-handed pitchers.

A-Rod broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez on July 24. He returned Sept. 3 and hit .195 with two homers and six RBIs over the final month of the regular season.

Cashman said Rodriguez's left hip injury was detected last month when he had an annual physical in Colorado with Dr. Marc Philippon, who operated on the right hip 3 1-2 years ago. Rodriguez got a second opinion from Dr. Bryan Kelly of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, who will operate on A-Rod next month, and the injury was made public Monday by the New York Post.

Cashman said "they're not your typical injuries" but wouldn't speculate whether they are related to steroids use. Rodriguez admitted in 2009 that he used steroids while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

"It doesn't matter what I wonder," Cashman said.

With Derek Jeter, who turns 39 in June, coming off surgery to repair a broken ankle, the left side of the Yankees' infield could be even more of a defensive problem.

Jeter expects to be ready for opening day. Eric Chavez, who filled in for Rodriguez for parts of the last two seasons, is a free agent and Cashman said there are few options on the market.

Rodriguez had a strained quadriceps in 2008, the hip surgery in 2009, a strained calf in 2010, knee surgery in 2011 and the broken hand this year. While he is fifth on the career list with 647 home runs, he had just 34 the last two seasons.

"When he's healthy ? obviously at one point he was spectacular," Cashman said. "One player doesn't make a team, and so we have a full roster of guys plus our farm system behind that that's going to have to fill in. We've done it before."

NOTES: Toronto claimed C Eli Whiteside off waivers from the Yankees, who claimed him from San Francisco last month.

Spectator falls from stands at ACC Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Authorities say a spectator has life-threatening injuries after falling about 40 feet from a ramp outside Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Saturday night at the ACC Championship football game between No. 13 Florida State and Georgia Tech.

Michael Stanford, the supervisor of special operations for Mecklenburg County EMS, says his agency responded to an incident in which a spectator fell from the ramp leading to the stands shortly after the 8 p.m. kickoff. The fall is the first of its kind from Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers.

The stadium opened in 1996.

Stanford says the spectator was transported by ground to the trauma center at Carolinas Medical Center with "life-threatening injuries."

Stanford would not say if the spectator was a male or female.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI greeted thousands of clowns, acrobats, puppeteers and even a pair of lion cubs on Saturday as the circus came to town for an unusual papal performance.

Benedict clapped and watched amused as circus workers flipped, flopped, juggled and twisted before him in what the Vatican has called a historic audience to make street performers and other itinerant entertainers feel like they belong to the church.

Benedict, a known cat lover, paid particular attention to a pair of lion cubs that were brought up to him, stroking them and chatting with their trainers. At one point Benedict even bent down to caress one ? not an easy feat given the 85-year-old pope has trouble with his knees and occasionally uses a cane.

Benedict acknowledged the sacrifices circus workers make to bring joy to young and old alike, traveling constantly and living on the margins of society. He noted they lack schools for their children or parish churches to call home. But he urged them to keep the faith.

"I hope that you can find, in the communities where you stay, people who are welcoming and available and able to care for your spiritual needs," Benedict said. He urged governments to better integrate itinerant entertainers in the social fabric.

A big top tent and carousel were mounted in St. Peter's Square to make the scene complete, and thousands of entertainers from a dozen countries filled a Vatican audience hall for the papal performance that featured acrobats and a puppet show.

Benedict has been entertained before by various circus troupes, but Vatican officials said Saturday's audience was unusual in that it involved so many different types of traveling performers from around the world, and was dedicated to them alone.

The event was organized by the Vatican office that looks out for the welfare of migrants, refugees, seamen as well as prostitutes and street children ? people who by force or choice live without stable homes.

No charges against Chris Brown in Fla. phone grab

MIAMI (AP) ? Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown will not face criminal charges for snatching a woman's cellphone when she tried to snap a photo of him outside a Miami Beach club, prosecutors said Friday.

A memo released Friday by Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle concludes there is no evidence that Brown intended to steal the phone in February or that he deleted any photos. One or the other is necessary for him to be charged with robbery or theft.

Prosecutors said that Brown tossed the phone from his limo and that it was picked up by Devon Blanche, head of security for rapper Tyga, who had performed with Brown at the Cameo club that night. According to the memo, Blanche tried to find out if someone had lost the phone, ultimately took it with him to Atlanta during the rapper's tour and said he intended to find its owner.

A felony charge against Brown, 24, might have triggered a violation of his probation for his 2009 assault on singer Rihanna, who was his girlfriend at the time. The two have recently collaborated on a new duet, "Nobody's Business," and have been spotted out together in recent weeks.

Rundle said the investigation's findings would be forwarded to probation officials in Los Angeles for review.

"We are grateful for the decision and the thorough investigation," Brown's attorney Mark Geragos said in an email.

According to the memo, after Brown and Tyga ? real name Michael Stevenson ? finished their performances, both got into separate limos to head for their hotels. Witnesses told prosecutors about 30 female fans gathered outside Brown's vehicle, at least one of whom reached inside to take a photo. Brown was accompanied by at least two women in the limo.

Stevenson told prosecutors that he saw Brown throw a white cellphone out of the limo. The phone's owner, Christal Spann, said Brown used a derogatory term for women and said "this will not run the website" when he grabbed the phone. Spann began beating on the limo's windows, according to the memo, until someone in a front seat told her the phone had been tossed out. She could not find it, however.

"She used to be a fan of Brown's, but no longer," the memo notes of Spann.

Blanche, the security man, told investigators he thought Brown was upset because "if photographs of himself with two females got out, it might cause him problems with Rihanna."

2012 White House Holiday Craft: Pomegranate Tree Ornaments

Joy to All, from the White House to your house...

First Lady Michelle Obama invited children from military families for a craft-making session in the State Dining Room when she unveiled this year's 'Joy to All' Christmas decor.? Led by Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, Mrs. Obama and the kids used whole pomegranates, ribbon, glitter glue and plastic doves to create sparkling ornaments.? The kids had a lot of fun making their keepsakes, and it's an easy and fun craft that can be recreated at home.? (Above:? Mrs. Obama at the craft table; Yosses is at left)

The pomegranates are briefly baked to dry out, to ensure that the ornaments last through the holiday season.? The First Lady and her junior guests drew designs on the pomegranates with the glitter glue--Mrs. Obama penned? a sparkly heart--and then wound green, red and gold ribbons around their fruit. The doves were pinned into the top, but any holiday decoration can be used, such as stars, snowmen, or tiny reindeer. White House Pomegranate Tree Ornaments

Whether your business exists solely online or not, you have to use the Internet in order to market yourself. TV advertising is usually too expensive and does not have the same opportunity for growth that online advertising provides. Social networks such as Twitter have become main outlets to the consumer. It?s all about branding, whether you are branding your business or yourself, and in order to get your name or your company?s name out into the world, you have to use Twitter. In order to make the most out of Twitter, you should buy Twitter followers.

What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social network service that allows you to post comments that are no longer than 140 characters. Subscribers can follow you in order to have access to all of your messages, or ?tweets?. They can also respond to your tweets with their own.

What are the Benefits of Using Twitter?
If you are running a business, then using Twitter will help to spread word of mouth about your business. However, Twitter does much more than just that.

  • Customer Input?? Since followers can post tweets on your account, you can directly see your customer?s reactions and input. It?s like getting a free test audience. This will help you to make changes that benefit not only your customers, but your business as well.
  • Personal Relationship?? There?s a distance between most companies and consumers in that there?s no relationship between the two other than the transaction of goods or services for money. Twitter allows you to talk directly to the customer, putting a personality behind the business and making it seem much more personable.
  • Generate Online Traffic?? You can use Twitter to announce discounts or sales, sending followers to your website soon after. This is much more efficient than placing ads in newspapers, on the radio or on TV.

Why You Should Buy Twitter Followers
The amount of followers you have determines how popular you are. The more followers you have the more potential customers you have. Followers also help spread word of mouth over Twitter, bringing in new business. So then why buy Twitter followers? If you don?t have many followers to start out with, it?s going to be difficult to gain more. Buying followers barely costs anything, and it gives you the appearance of popularity. This is what brings more followers. People will notice how many followers you have and assume it is for good reason: that you have something to offer that other businesses do not.

Twitter is the new way for businesses and brands to market themselves. Buy Twitter followers in order to increase your popularity and expand your market reach.

Promising drug slows down advance of Parkinson's disease and improves symptoms

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Treating Parkinson's disease patients with the experimental drug GM1 ganglioside improved symptoms and slowed their progression during a two and a half-year trial, Thomas Jefferson University researchers report in a new study published online November 28 in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences.

Although the precise mechanisms of action of this drug are still unclear, the drug may protect patients' dopamine-producing neurons from dying and at least partially restore their function, thereby increasing levels of dopamine, the key neurochemical missing in the brain of Parkinson's patients.

The research team, led by senior author Jay S. Schneider, Ph.D., Director of the Parkinson's Disease Research Unit and Professor in the Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Cell Biology and the Department of Neurology at Jefferson, found that administration of GM1 ganglioside, a substance naturally enriched in the brain that may be diminished in Parkinson's disease brains, acted as a "neuroprotective" and a "neurorestorative" agent to improve symptoms and over an extended period of time slow the progression of symptoms.

What's more, once the study participants went off the drug, their disease worsened. The study enrolled 77 subjects and followed them over a 120-week period and also followed 17 subjects who received current standard of care treatment for comparison.

"The drugs currently available for Parkinson's disease are designed to treat symptoms and to improve function, but at this time there is no drug that has been shown unequivocally to slow disease progression," said Dr. Schneider. "Our data suggest that GM1 ganglioside has the potential to have symptomatic and disease-modifying effects on Parkinson's disease. If this is substantiated in a larger clinical study, GM1 could provide significant benefit for Parkinson's disease patients."

Symptoms of the Parkinson's disease, which affects over 1 million people in the United States today and is diagnosed in 60,000 adults every year, include tremors, slowness in movement, difficulty initiating movements, difficulty walking, balance problems and decrease in speech volume and facial expression. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, the brain region that dies in Parkinson's disease; the cause of this cell death is unknown.

GM1 ganglioside is a chemical that is normally found in the brain and part of the outer covering of nerve cells. It plays important roles in neuron development and survival and modulates a wide variety of cell activities. GM1 has been found to rescue damaged neurons and increase dopamine levels in pre-clinical studies, and has been suggested to have beneficial effects in other neurodegenerative conditions.

Dr. Schneider and his team made a case for the use of GMI for Parkinson's disease beginning in the 1980s. The pathological processes contributing to the development and progression of Parkinson's disease are still unclear, but they appear to be multifactorial. Because GM1 has effects on many different cellular functions, it seemed a logical approach to try using a drug like GM1 ganglioside to modify the pathological processes occurring in Parkinson's disease, rather than focusing on a specific potential disease mechanism, said Dr. Schneider.

"Instead of a magic bullet, we think of it like a magic shotgun," he said. "This study was truly a success of translational research."

The GM1 research started in mice, where Dr. Schneider and his team found that animals with an experimentally induced form of Parkinson's disease and administered GM1 had significantly higher levels of dopamine in their brains and less loss of dopamine neurons than animals that did not receive GM1.

A follow-up study in a non-human primate Parkinson model found similar results: animals that received GM1 had higher levels of dopamine than animals that did not and had a significant improvement in Parkinson symptoms.

In the late 1990s, Dr. Schneider conducted a short-term study (16 weeks) using GM1 in a small number of patients. Improvement in symptoms was observed in patients who received GM1 compared to patients who received a non-active placebo. However, in order to determine if there was potential for GM1 to slow the progression of the disease, they would have to study patients over a longer period of time -- which led them to this current study.

There were three main groups of subjects in this controlled, randomized, delayed start trial funded by the National Institutes of Health. Patients were given a placebo for the first six months and then GM1 for 2 years (known as the delayed start group); patients were given GM1 from the beginning and continued on GM1 for the duration of the study (early-start group); and a comparison group, where patients agreed to be observed over the same time period, but did not take the drug or a placebo -- they only took the drugs prescribed by their doctor.

The delayed start study design has been suggested to be useful for studying a drug that may have effects both on symptoms and disease progression in Parkinson's disease.

The change over time in the Unified Parkinson's Diseasing Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor score was the primary measure used to assess symptoms and disease progression in patients.

At the end of the first six months of the study, the early-start group had significant improvement in UPDRS motor scores versus a significant worsening of scores in the delayed-start group. Over the next two years, early start subjects maintained much of the initial benefit of GM1 treatment, showed relatively minor symptom progression compared to patients using standard anti-Parkinson medications, and at the end of the study, their symptoms were still less severe than at the start of the study over two years earlier.

Delayed start subjects also showed improvement of symptoms after switching to GM1 use and also showed less symptom progression over the next two years compared to the standard-of-care patients. Both groups had significant symptom worsening over the next one to two years after stopping use of GM1.

In short, GM1 appeared to improve symptoms and with extended use, slow symptom progression.

"The data from this small proof-of-concept study suggest that GM1 has the potential to have a very positive effect on the lives of Parkinson's disease patients," said Dr. Schneider. "We've been working on this for a long time and have some good ideas on how to move this forward. I think it's important to continue to develop this therapy."

Suspect in string of ecoterrorism fires surrenders

One of the three remaining fugitives in a string of high-profile fires across the West that focused national attention on a group of environmental radicals surrendered to authorities Thursday after spending years in hiding in Canada.

The U.S. attorney's office in Portland, Ore., said Rebecca Jeanette Rubin, 39, a Canadian citizen, turned herself in to the FBI at the Canadian border in Blaine, Wash.

Rubin was arrested after spending a decade as an international fugitive from the largest ecoterrorism investigation in U.S. history, the U.S. attorney's office said. The former wildlife researcher was part of a cell of the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front known as The Family, based in Eugene, Ore.

Rubin was sought on conspiracy and arson indictments dating to 2006 alleging she helped set fires at the Vail ski resort in Colorado and at federal wild horse corrals in Eastern Oregon and Northern California, and that she tried to set fire to a lumber mill office in Medford, Ore.

Defense attorney Richard Roberman said Rubin wanted to get the case behind her, and was dropped off at the border by her mother. She tried to surrender earlier, but tentative deals fell through with three different U.S. attorney districts.

Rubin wore a white cardigan for her appearance in federal court in Seattle. She breathed deeply as a prosecutor read the indictment and smiled briefly as the judge greeted her.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Peifer in Portland, Ore., said Rubin would be kept in custody and transported to Eugene, Ore., for trial.

Rubin is not specifically charged with terrorism, but the indictment alleges she and the other members of The Family tried to influence businesses and the government and tried to retaliate against the government. Prosecutors won terrorism enhancements at sentencing for some of the others in the case.

Ten people pleaded guilty in 2007 to conspiracy and arson in the case, and were sentenced to prison. Two others remain at large.

At the time, the FBI characterized the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front as the top domestic terrorism threats in the nation.

Authorities have said the Earth Liberation Front cell was responsible for 20 arsons around the West from 1996 to 2001 that did $40 million in damage.

The highest-profile case was the 1998 fire that destroyed a restaurant and other facilities at the Vail Ski Resort in Colorado. Other targets included a plant research facility at the University of Washington and several businesses and other structures in Oregon ? a horse slaughterhouse, U.S. Forest Service ranger stations, a power transmission tower, a tree farm and an SUV dealership.

The group disbanded in 2001, but a federal taskforce known as Operation Backfire turned an informant and broke open the cell in 2005.

By then, the group's leader, William C. Rodgers, was running a bookstore in Prescott, Ariz. After his arrest, Rodgers committed suicide in jail. Authorities described him as a Svengali-like guru and sexual predator who liked to call himself Avalon, after an island from the legend of King Arthur.

The informant was Jacob Ferguson, a local environmental activist who once had a pentagram tattooed on his forehead and studied diesel mechanics at a community college. Prosecutors said he agreed to take a recorder into Family meetings around the country to break through their code of silence. Originally sentenced to probation, Ferguson was sent to prison after authorities found him selling heroin.

In a 2009 paper on environmental terrorism, sociologists Brent L. Smith of University of Arkansas and Kelly R. Damphousse of University of Oklahoma wrote that The Family members were mostly from middle-class backgrounds, though a few, like Ferguson, had a criminal history. The group developed from the environmental activist and anarchist community of Eugene, Ore.

In the Vail arson, the group issued a communique saying the buildings were burned as retribution for the Forest Service allowing the resort to expand into critical habitat for the Canada lynx, a threatened species. The attack focused national attention on the idea of ecoterrorism.

However, by the time they were sentenced, members of The Family expressed regret and frustration that after all their hardships, they had accomplished practically nothing.

A horse slaughterhouse in Redmond, Ore., was never rebuilt, but the ski resort and ranger stations were reconstructed, timber companies stayed in business, and wild horses were still rounded up and removed from federal lands.

The two remaining fugitives are Joseph Mahmoud Dibee and Josephine Sunshine Overaker, Ferguson's former girlfriend. Dibee is believed to be in Syria, where he has family, and Overaker is believed to be in Europe, Peifer said.

Animal rights activist Peter Young spent eight years as a fugitive before officers stumbled upon him in 2005 at a Santa Cruz, Calif., Starbucks. He eventually served two years in prison for freeing thousands of mink from Midwest fur farms in the name of the Animal Liberation Front in 1997.

"There are two rules to being a good fugitive," he told The Associated Press on Thursday. "If you have an ID under a different name and don't call your parents, you can live free for a very long time."

Young added there is a benefit to staying on the run for a long time, as Rubin did: "The lawyers all told me at different times as I was preparing to turn myself in, but never did ? they said, 'You stay away for a long time, the feds usually get to the point they're not so zealous about your case anymore.'"

Eat your Way Around the World: Global Table Adventure

I had the pleasure of interviewing Sasha, of Global Table Adventure, who is making 195 meals, from 195 different countries in 195 weeks? Truly eating her way around the world with her husband (affectionately known as ?Mr. Picky?) and her the adorable, adventurous, almost 5 year old daughter Ava.

With gorgeous, tantalizing photographs (that you only wish were scratch and sniff!), her web site is part cookbook, part armchair travelogue, part video-culinary review by her daughter? whether you love to cook or you love to eat, this is an amazing educational experience in world cultures and anthropology from her kitchen to yours.

Stuffed Grape Leaves Qatar food - Kid World CitizenThe genius behind the Global Table Adventure is Sasha Martin. Sasha spent several years as a child in both France and Luxembourg, and is now hoping to teach her daughter about other cultures through these culinary adventures. She had the idea to begin cooking her way around the world when Ava was only 7 months old and just beginning solid foods. Sasha admits that her husband is a bit of a picky eater, so as a family they decided to cook and eat dishes from every country in the world- in alphabetical order- as a way to exposing her daughter to different textures and spices and hopefully avoid finicky habits.

Russian Food Recipe- Kid World CitizenThus the Global Table Adventure family project grew into a movement, that became a way to use food to open minds, and learn something quite nice about countries around the world. Sasha purposefully chooses dishes that are not too exotic (not?? la exotics of Andrew Zimmerman or Anthony Bourdain), but rather accessible meals that mix some familiar ingredients with new spices, or cooked in a different way.

Philippines food recipe- Kid World CitizenMonday: Shares the recipes and reviews the meal from the previous country with videos of Ava trying the food.

Travel Tuesday: An overview of the country?s cuisine so readers can learn about popular foods and traditions.

Wednesday: The menu is revealed. Sasha often includes an appetizer, vegetable, main course, and dessert, or sometimes a drink or soup recipe.

Technique Thursday: Sometimes a video or recipe typical from that country, Sasha teaches you about a new ingredient or technique.

Fun Friday: Lots of fun facts, tidbits

Nauru food Picky Eaters- Kid World CitizenIn the last part of the interview, I asked Sasha her tips for parents who have picky eaters.

?It?s not about the food, it?s mostly about the texture or the format. Try chopping it up really fine or changing the presentation or cooking technique,? says Sasha. ?People don?t give their kids enough credit.? What she?s done for Ava is to set a couple of rules. First, everyone must always taste the dish- and it?s OK to admit when you don?t like it. When Ava?s scared to try something, Sasha explains ?It?s exciting to try it, but even mama doesn?t like everything.? She also debunks the myth that if you offer something 5 times, your children will begin to like it: ?Don?t give up! Five times is sometimes not enough.? When you?re kids do try something new, ?reward them with enthusiasm.? Finally, in Sasha?s house, what?s for dinner is what?s for dinner- no making pb&j every time your children don?t like something. This will just feed into their finickiness and discourage them from even trying new foods. Here are a few of Ava?s favorite foods, with links to their recipes on the Global Table Adventure page:

Portuguese Tuna and Chickpea Salad

Grilled Kofta and Zucchini Sauce from Oman

Moroccan Lamb Tangine

I cannot wait to follow in her global footsteps and start choosing recipes to try!!! I love her mission, and think that you will too:

You see, we create peace when we learn about each other ? when we understand one another.? But here?s the thing ? we can?t create peace alone; We must set a Global Table and invite everyone to sit down together as one family.

You can follow Sasha?s Global Table Adventures on her awesome web site, facebook page, or twitter. Browse through her recipes, and then let us know which you?d like to try!

Ninja Mom: Requiem for Pedro the fish.

Yesterday we bid goodbye to Pedro, our Betta fish. He was a good
fish insofar as he stayed in his bowl and was quieter than any other living
thing in this house, including a particularly raucous house plant. It was my
favorite thing about him. And now he?s permanently quiet.

As we often find when faced with death, I had to ask myself some difficult questions. Had he been dead the night before and I'd been too absorbed in my own concerns to notice his passing? Was there something I could have done differently to prolong his life past seven months??Can I use the pasta spoon to scoop him out of the tank? ?

I told the kids right away, because I?m forthcoming with them when it comes to difficult subjects as long as those subjects?aren't?sex. Bee cried for a moment, tears of a child facing the reality that we all die. Hers was the sadness that comes when realizing we all have an undisclosed measure of life to live. Tears of an over-reactor, too, as moments later she was giggling about the toilet vs. garbage burial plans. But then, maybe I?m being too harsh. Maybe they were the giggles of an injured heart trying to cope. I?didn't?cry, a fact of which I'm quite proud. Motherhood and a shaky emotional platform has made me into the kind of woman who cries over Hallmark commercials, particularly delicious food, and unscheduled opportunities to nap. I figured I could go either way on the fish. But I was stoic. I can only hope for the same the next time I forget to buy coffee. The children speculated on Pedro?s death. Did the saying goodbye to his visitors over Thanksgiving, our neighbor?s fish Peaches and Rosie, send him into a depression from which he could not recover? I doubt it as the only logical end to that scenario would be death by suicide and he?didn't?leave a note. Maybe he had one of the dreaded rots. I don?t know much about fish diseases, but?I've?heard about different kinds of conditions that revolve around rotting to death. What have fish done to piss off God that they are capable of rotting while still alive and how does this make the ingestion of sushi safe? What if your sashimi was already rotting when it was alive and swimming? We settled on old age, a safe bet. It?s a miracle that he survived the car ride home from the pet store back in April. Funeral plans were decided upon. I pooh-poohed burial because that?s a bit labor intensive and I had visions of our dogs digging a hole to discover the source of the rank odor caused by Pedro?s decay the same way?they've?dug holes around the roots of most of our bushes looking for elusive moles. Someone suggested the garbage disposal and yes I?ll be keeping an eye on that kid. We won?t be raising the next Dexter Morgan here. It came down to flush or toss? We agreed to flush and say a few words toilet-side. There?wasn't?time for an obit in the local newspaper, but I think Pedro would have wanted the final celebration of his life to pass without fanfare. Kind, sensible things were said about Pedro. Mostly by me because children can be counted on to say only ridiculous things at fish funerals. Someone hoped Pedro would get better back home in the ocean. You know, the magic reanimating ocean he never came from. Another child thanked God for our time with Pedro and attributed qualities to him that he never demonstrated. Among them were greatness and a sense of humor. I thanked God for giving us our short time with Pedro, and because I grew up Catholic and am no stranger to covering my rear, prayed that I had been a good steward of my scaly friend, so please don?t punish me in my afterlife, Lord. There was a brief scramble for the toilet handle that lead to a tie, thank heavens, and I was able to convince the child who?d been promised the mortuary duty of disposing of the dead that she and her sister flushed together. You can?t redo a fish flushing the same way you can promise a child that she can be the next to try a new toy or get her face painted. Life has continued since Pedro?s passing. We are getting a new fish the next time we?re at the pet store. Surely that?s not a surprise. In the hierarchy of replaceable pets, fish are at the top, followed by hermit crabs, mice, hamsters, birds, bunnies, cats, dogs, and babysitters.?We've?moved through the shock and grief of dealing with the circle of life first hand and have already decided that the greatest tragedy was not losing Pedro, but that we?didn't?buy four fish in the first place because next time around everyone gets to pick a name. If there was a teachable moment in all of this, something I could shine up and present to my kids as wisdom and prove myself a parent worthy of rearing them, it was this: We can?t flush the dogs when they go.

I'm considering opening a pet funeral home. Click the banner below to hear about our "Beloved Companion" package.?

Hackers Attack the International Atomic Energy Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has acknowledged that hackers successfully breached its cyber-defenses and obtained a list of agency email addresses. A group calling itself Parastoo (a Farsi word for a bird and a common girl's name in Iran) has claimed responsibility.

InfoSecurity reported, "A new hacktivist collective calling itself Parastoo took responsibility for compromising the UN?s nuclear watchdog agency, but the IAEA hasn?t confirmed who the culprits actually may be. Parastoo has posted a manifesto filled with shout-outs to other hacktivist groups like Lulz and Anonymous, along with allusions to various Middle East cyberwar touchpoints like the Stuxnet worm. It demands that that the IAEA look into Israel?s nuclear activities: specifically, it wants to know the purpose of a facility at Dimona that is widely assumed to be a nuclear weapons manufacturing plant. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied this, and calls for investigation into the plant are common from Arab states."

The Verge's Chris Welch noted, "The International Atomic Energy Agency has fallen victim to hackers, who managed to access one of the UN agency's servers and publish over 100 retrieved email addresses on the web. The leaked contact data belongs to workers that have assisted the IAEA in its quest to reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons across the globe. Apparently it's dated information, however, with the IAEA claiming the addresses were "stolen from an old server that was shut down some time ago." Nonetheless, the agency's security teams are currently working to ensure no further sensitive data is compromised."

The Business Insider quoted the hackers, who wrote, ?The above list who technically help IAEA could be considered a partner in crime should an accident happen there. In such case ... Parastoo will publish whereabouts of every single one of these individuals alongside with bits of helpful personal and professional details.?

Computerworld's Lucian Constantin noted, "The IAEA is an international organization that promotes the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy and discourages the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The agency reports issues of non-compliance by states to the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council."

Mobile phone overage fees? It's time to upgrade your plan

If you repeatedly exceed your monthly minutes on your mobile phone contract, it may be time for a mobile phone plan upgrade, Hamm writes.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / November 27, 2012

In this June 30, 2010 file photo, an Associated Press reporter holds the Motorola Droid X during a product review in San Francisco. Hamm offers some ways to calculating if a plan upgrade will save you money.

Jeff Chiu/AP/File

When Sarah and I signed our first cell phone contract, we signed up for a plan that gave us roughly 400 minutes per month, which seemed like a reasonable amount based on our estimates. After the two year contract, we found that we had only gone over that limit twice, so we signed up again for the same limit.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Before our next contract signing, we sat down to evaluate our situation. During the previous two years, we had only gone over our alloted minutes twice, so it seemed straightforward that we would just continue our plan.

There was a bit of a catch, though. We still had those bills from the overage months, and when we sat down and did the math,?the cost of our overage minutes from those months was far higher than the two year cost of a plan that would cover all of those minutes.

That?s right. Upgrading to a plan that covered all of that usage?and?gave us far more breathing room in every other month was cheaper than the overage costs of just two months of usage.?

49ers use Kaepernick, defense to top Saints 31-21

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Even if Colin Kaepernick's second start was hardly as spectacular as his first, he played well enough to extend coach Jim Harbaugh's quarterback quandary for at least another week.

With the 49ers' defense making big plays of its own, it might not have mattered who was under center.

Ahmad Brooks and Donte Whitner each returned interceptions for touchdowns, a pass rush led by Aldon Smith sacked Drew Brees five times, and San Francisco ended New Orleans' three-game winning streak, 31-21 on Sunday.

"We always want to be the best defense on the field, especially on the road," Whitner said. "When you play us, you are going to get hit. That's our identity: smart, hard-nose, physical football."

Kaepernick was solid in his second career start while Alex Smith, deemed healthy enough to suit up after recovering from a concussion, watched from the sideline in uniform. Kaepernick passed for 231 yards, including a short touchdown to Frank Gore. He also ran for a 7-yard score. He threw his first career interception, but it was inconsequential.

"We got a win, so that's all that really matters," Kaepernick said.

Niners coach Jim Harbaugh implied the decision to start Kaepernick had more to do with preserving Smith's long-term health than on performance, but he was noncommittal about who might start next week at St. Louis.

"The fact he had symptoms seven to eight days later, I'm not going to put a guy back out there," Harbaugh said of Smith. "He eventually got cleared. The plan was to rotate him back into the action (in practice), but not all the way to the front line. ... That would give him a chance to get cleared up completely."

Smith did not seem to think he needed to more time, but kept complaints to a minimum.

"Obviously I want to play. I want to start. I think I should, but it's not my decision," Smith said. "I'm part of this team and it's great to go out and get a win."

Brees finished with 267 yards and three TDs. After rushing for 140 yards or more in each of its previous three games, New Orleans (5-6) managed only 59 yards against San Francisco (8-2-1).

One of Brees' scoring passes went to Marques Colston, who set a Saints record with his 56th career touchdown for the club.

The Niners gained 144 yards on the ground, led by Gore with 83. The Saints shut down tight end Vernon Davis, but the Niners' other tight end, Delanie Walker, had three catches for 81 yards, including one for 45 yards to set up a touchdown.

The Saints had to play recently acquired reserve William Robinson at right tackle after rookie Bryce Harris, making his first start because of injuries to Zach Strief and Charles Brown, was carted off with an apparent right leg injury. But just about every Saints lineman was beaten on a Niners sack. Brooks, Aldon Smith and Justin Smith each had 1? sacks, all in the second half.

"They're a good defense," Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt said of San Francisco. "When you lose your right tackle and you've got to play with a young man who's been here four days, that's a tough challenge."

San Francisco's interceptions came during a 21-0 spurt that turned a 14-7 deficit into a 28-14 lead.

"You give them two free ones and that's what they thrive on," Brees said. "All of a sudden they rattle off 21 points in a short amount of time and we really felt like we had the game under control."

Brooks snagged the first, returning it 50 yards late in the first half to tie the game at 14.

The second came on Brees' first pass of the second half. The ball deflected off Colston's hands as the leaping receiver was upended and briefly shaken up. Whitner snagged the deflected pass and returned it 42 yards to make it 28-14.

Since losing to the New York Giants on Oct. 14, the Niners are 5-0-1 and hold a 2 1/2-game lead in the NFC West.

It seems their biggest problem at this point is deciding who should be their No. 1 QB. Smith, who led the Niners to the NFC title game last season, started the first nine games.

"That would be coach's decision," Kaepernick said. "I'm just trying to take a similar approach that I've been taking, just keep my head down, keep working and see where it takes me."

The Saints, meanwhile, missed a chance to pull into a tie for the last NFC wild card berth, and remain a game out with another tough game coming up at Atlanta on Thursday night.

Kaepernick gave the Niners the early lead, scoring easily on a read-option run that fooled the Saints' defense.

New Orleans tied it on tight end David Thomas' 6-yard catch, then took the lead on Colston's TD, capping a drive that began when Ted Ginn Jr.'s fumbled punt was recovered by Rafael Bush on the 49ers 10.

New Orleans was looking to go up by two scores after Kaepernick's interception on an underthrown pass that cornerback Patrick Robinson easily caught. Instead, Brooks tied it, stepping in front of a pass for Jimmy Graham.

NOTES: Saints DT Brodrick Bunkley was thrown out for unsportsmanlike conduct with 1:05 left for kicking lineman Alex Boone in the back of the helmet right after the Saints had blocked a field goal ... Aldon Smith's sack of Brees in the third quarter was his 16th this season, 30th in his career. He became only the second player to reach 30 sacks in his first two seasons, joining Reggie White (31) and Derrick Thomas (30). He reached it in fewer games (27) than either of them. ... Niners WR Kyle Williams and RB Kendall Hunter both were shaken up on the same play in the second half with apparent leg injuries. ... Saints S Isa Abdul-Quddus left the game after a hard collision with tight end Delanie Walker in the fourth quarter.

Colts' Cheerleader Who Shaved Head 'Personally Affected by Cancer'

Nov 26, 2012 2:55pm

The Indianopolis Colts? cheerleader who had her head shaved in front of 60,000 cheering fans and a national TV audience had a very personal reason for agreeing to lose her locks to the team?s mascot for cancer research.

?I?ve had family members and mentors [with cancer] and I volunteer at a local children?s hospital and met little girls who lost their hair and saw the bravery that they possess and it was just something that I wanted to do to help reach others,? Megan M. said today on ?Good Morning America.?

Megan, whose last name was withheld by the Colts as standard team policy, was the sole Colts? cheerleader to accept a challenge sent out by Blue, the team?s mascot, via Twitter earlier this month to support head coach Chuck Pagano in his battle against leukemia.? Megan agreed to lose her locks if Blue could raise $10,000 for cancer research by Nov. 25.

In just weeks, through fans? donations to the CHUCKSTRONG fund on the team?s website,? more than $22,000 was raised so Megan lost her hair at the start of the Colts? fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.? While Megan was the only cheerleader to publicly agree to the challenge, she was joined by fellow cheerleader Crystal Ann in shaving solidarity on game day, and the two held hands as they both went under the razor.

?The fans were so supportive and just cheering for me the whole entire time and my captain was really great,? Megan M. told ?GMA? of the very public experience.? ?She tried to call a lot of dances that did not involve a lot of hair whipping around to make me feel more comfortable when I was getting used to it.?

Blue?s challenge to the team?s cheerleaders came after a group of Colts? players and coaches shaved their heads in support of Pagano, who is undergoing chemotherapy to battle his leukemia.

In addition to Blue?s challenge, the team also partnered with Great Clips earlier this month to offer fans who wanted to shave their heads in honor of Coach Pagano a free buzz cut and a $10 donation to Blue?s CHUCKSTRONG Challenge.? All money raised will go to the IU Health Simon Cancer Center, according to the Colts? website.

No Greek debt writedown in next rescue package: ECB's Asmussen

BERLIN (Reuters) - A write-down on Greek debt should not be part of the country's next rescue package, European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen told Germany's Bild newspaper ahead of Monday's euro zone group meeting.

"We need a package of measures to close the financial gap that will include a substantial reduction of the interest rates and a debt buy-back by Greece," Asmussen said in an interview to appear on Monday. "A hair cut does not belong to that package."

Asmussen said, in excerpts of the interview released on Sunday, that he hoped euro zone finance ministers would reach a speedy decision.

"I very much hope that the euro zone group will reach a political decision on Monday so that the next loan installment can be released. For that the financing gap for the next two years has to be closed by the other euro zone countries.

"Everyone must show a willingness to move for that to succeed," he said.

Euro zone finance ministers, the ECB and the International Monetary Fund have met twice in the past two weeks but failed both times to agree on the next steps for Greece and how to bring its debt level down to a sustainable level.

They will meet again on Monday.

Germany, the EU's biggest economy and paymaster, has led resistance within the euro zone to calls from the IMF and others to accept losses on their Greek debt holdings and give Greece, entering its sixth year of recession, a chance to grow again.

Greece's international creditors will hold crunch talks next Monday - their third meeting in as many weeks - to unlock loans needed to avert bankruptcy for the stricken nation.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble reiterated on Thursday his official view that a writedown of Greek debt by euro zone governments would be wrong and illegal. But two sources told Reuters he had signaled a more flexible attitude at a small gathering of ministers in Paris on Monday, before the failed talks in Brussels on Tuesday.

Members of Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition have said granting Greece debt relief would undermine the reform drive in other struggling euro zone countries such as Portugal.

Schaeuble said on Wednesday the funding gap could be funded by a mixture of letting Greece buy back its own debt at a discount, tapping ECB profits on Greek bond purchases and lowering interest rates on government loans to Athens, though not below the cost to lenders.
